After the ambush murders of two NYPD officers by a mentally ill man, NYPD union president – Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association – Pat Lynch blamed supporters of Eric Garner and Michael Brown and Mayor Bill De Blasio for the murders of Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. Then in a prepared statement Pat Lynch declared a Blue Coup by announcing disregard for the mayor’s office and imposing martial law police tactics. In the statement, Lynch claimed that De Blasio’s hands were “literally dripping with our blood,” and that the NYPD has for the “first time in a number of years, become a ‘wartime’ police department. We will act accordingly”
Since the murders of the two Ramos and Liu, NYPD police officers have turned their backs on Mayor De Blasio multiple times. The first occurred when he arrived at the hospital the night of the crime and then thousands more turned their backs when he spoke at the funeral for Rafael Ramos. To personally politicize the threatening of a Blue Coup and the actions of NYPD union president Pat Lynch and other officers, Pennsylvania Republican State Representative, and former suburban Philadelphia police officer, Mike Vereb posted two selfies with NYPD officers at the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.
The selfies that Mike Vereb posted stated:
We have ur back nypd the hell with ur mayor.
This says it all. We won’t turn our backs on the cops. This guy was at the funeral today when they all turned their back on that loser mayor. Blue power”
Following the non-indictment of the cop that killed Eric Garner, Mike Vereb posted a photo of him getting a police escort through Center City Philadelphia. That caption read:
So this is my escort thru the ridiculous fact that half the city is closed down due to protests regarding ferguson. So productive people.
Then a couple weeks later Vereb called for the arrests of clergy leaders, community leaders and organizers for staging a four minute die-in after the Eagles game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Sure, you can paint Mike Vereb as “anti-demonstrator,” which he surely is, but the issues that this former police officer is taking to social media goes beyond being “anti-demonstrator.” Your personal response to the deaths of Michael Brown, John Crawford, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner and many more unarmed African Americans by police officers asks one simple question. Which side are you on? There is no middle ground when the issue of human and civil rights are brought forward. You are either for justice or you are for the Blue Coup.
