#FlyersTalk: Ed Snider Is Not for the Working Man

Which side is Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider on?

Not on the working class’ side.

Joseph DiStefano from the Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that Philadelphia Flyers Owner Ed Snider has donated millions of dollars to a Charles Koch funded project at the University of Maryland.  The article states:

Ed Snider, longtime owner of the Philadelphia Flyers (NHL) and chairman of Comcast-Spectacor, says he has given $5 million to the Robert H. Smith School of Business at Snider’s alma mater, the University of Maryland, where Snider got his accounting degree, to fund the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets. Billionaire chemical magnate and political donor Charles Koch is kicking in another $1 million, Maryland says in this statement.

In the Washington Post, Snider shared his love for the free market and said, “I’m very much interested in entrepreneurship and how markets function to foster entrepreneurs or impede them, and I’m also interested in the results of entrepreneurial efforts.”  But this isn’t the first time the Flyers Owner has pledged millions to the founding of a free market think tank!  In 1983 / 1984ish, Ed Snider co-founded the Ayn Rand Institute, which:

“Works to introduce young people to Ayn Rand’s novels, to support scholarship and research based on her ideas, and to promote the principles of reason, rational self-interest, individual rights and laissez-faire capitalism to the widest possible audience.”

The Ayn Rand Organization currently has Ayn Rand “book clubs” on 45 United States universities, an executive-directors giving speeches titled “Why Conservatives are Anti-Business,” and scholarship program that gives $100,000 to 600 high school and college students.  On top of that,  the ARI received anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 from the Koch Brothers between 2005 and 2010, published papers on climate denialism and advocates for the suppression of wages and the elimination of worker protections.

Sure, Ed Snider may not be “active” with Ayn Rand Institute anymore, but he is an active player in the world of dark money politics that is ripping our society apart.  In the mid 80s, he spawned a free market think tank that has gone on to infiltrate our education system and our national dialogue on climate denialism and the suppression of workers rights and wages.  And in 2014, the owner of the Philadelphia Flyers and the most influential person in dark money politics have intersected paths by creating another free market think tank that will continue the climate denialism narrative and the attacks on the working class.

We know what side Ed Snider is on.  but which side are Flyers fans on?   The lousy scab’s or the working man’s?
