History repeats itself because humans are greedy, impetuous, murderous creatures, and somehow the best of us can not contain the basest. Welcome to the point in the Anthropocene where we decide what will become of us. Hold those you love close, and love generously and loudly.
On Friday January 20, 2017 the most thoroughly incompetent individual ever elected to the position of President of the United States of America will be sworn in. This is not a point to be debated, so keep your fucking comments to yourself.
The current PEOTUS secured the Presidency through 304 Electoral College votes, while losing the popular vote by 2.9 million votes. I still can not believe this is going to happen. I went to bed around 9pm on November 8, deciding to listen to my favorite radio station and read, rather than stay up and watch votes be tallied. I awoke at 5:30am November 9, to a Guardian announcement on my phone stating that Donald Trump had been elected the next US President. My knees buckled. I still am in shock, but not disbelief. This moment was decades in the making, while the fight is the same as it ever was.
1980: Reagan began the devolution of the social contract in America, that FDR fought so hard to put in concrete terms, with Thatcher attacking the UK through slashing taxes on the most fortunate and the fictive corporate persons, deregulation and privatization. The rise of the Lobbyist has greased the wheels of industry, and the lack of will in our most influential politicians to stand up for their citizenry ensured the rise of the Monied Class.
And woven through that story, always and ever-present, the effluent that oils the cogs of empire: racism and religious fanaticism. You can look that up on your own.
The last two months have been filled with frantic attempts to blame, to understand, to comprehend the magnitude of this gross failure of participatory democracy to elect representatives who will protect the weakest. The last two months have been filled with the constant drum of the Call to Arms. It has been a wild ride, for all this time, life has gone on for the fortunate. We celebrate holidays, we engage with technology and float through social media forums, we plan for the future.
We plan for the future: Plan for the worst and hope for the best.
