July 2016 marks Raging Chicken Press’s 5 year anniversary. It’s been quite a journey. As part of our anniversary agenda, we have launched a new podcast, Raging Chicken Radio, and we are looking to expand the number of writers and contributors. And, I’ll be honest, we’re going for broke. That is, we are going to make a big push between now and the end of the year to raise enough funds to begin paying our contributors and creating a sustainable progressive media network for Pennsylvania and beyond.
Here’s the thing. We can’t do it without you.
We want to do this with the support from the progressive/left community in PA and across the region and nation. We don’t want to rely upon foundation money or advertising dollars to keep us going. We want to be answerable to the progressive community, not corporations or foundations.
It’s a gamble, I know. We’ve all gotten used to getting our news and reporting for free. We’ve relied upon a model of journalism that asks journalists to live paycheck to paycheck, work full-time or a couple of part-time jobs to pay the bills in order to support their reporting. Raging Chicken only survives because we put in lots of our “free time” to make it happen. But it’s not sustainable.
So, we are making one last push to see if we can take this project to the next level. Our new membership system is up and running and you can become a member for as little as $2/month. Seriously, that’s less than a cup of coffee or a beer.
At the end of this year, we will take stock to see if it makes sense to keep on going. Don’t get me wrong, we firmly believe in this work. We love this work. But love is not enough if we are going to create a sustainable model of journalism that pulls no punches and is able to combat the billionaire-funded right-wing media empire. They’ve got their billionaires, but we’ve got the people. So, shall we do this together?
