News recently broke that George Zimmerman is selling the gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman, who was a neighborhood watch volunteer, got into a physical altercation with Trayvon Martin, which then turned fatal. Zimmerman used Florida’s “stand your ground” defense for the shooting and was later found not guilty in Martin’s death. Martin was only armed with a bottle of iced tea and a bag of skittles.
In the time after Martin’s death, members of the African American community and supporters held demonstrations in cities across the country to bring attention to the shooting and a trial. These demonstrations were the precursor of many more that occurred after an unarmed African American was killed by someone associated with the law.
During George Zimmerman’s trial, his defense used disparaging photos of Trayvon Martin to make it look like the unarmed teenager was the aggressor. One of the photographs used was Trayvon Martin looking into a camera and posing with both middle fingers in the air. Zimmerman’s defense put these photos online and the right-wing echo chamber ate them up immediately.
Jumping forward to today, KDKA “Money and Politics” editor Joe Delano posted a tweet asking viewers and followers what they think about George Zimmerman selling the gun he “used in self defense against attack by
#TrayvonMartin.” The tweet then included a photo of Trayvon Martin posing with gold teeth and both middle fingers in the air. It was part of the photos that the Zimmerman defense uploaded online and tried to use against Martin.
This comes weeks after WTAE fired Wendy Bell for a controversial Facebook post after a shooting she reported on.
