Speaker Turzai has 99 Problems and Finishing the #PABudget Ain’t One

Update: The PA House has cancelled session for Saturday and reconvene Sunday at 5 PM

Earlier today, fifteen to twenty rank and file House Democrats gathered on the 2nd floor balcony asking reporters:  “Where is the House Speaker?”  The Commonwealth is in a 164 day budget stalemate that looks like it might be – or should be – ending soon.

The House was out of session yesterday and today, which falls in line with one of the year’s largest fundraisers for the Pennsylvania Republican Party and corporate Democrats: The Commonwealth Club event held in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Society dinner in New York City. The event will held on Sunday, December 12 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. This year’s fundraiser is hosting the anti-muslim, carnival barker that is running for president, but members were tight-lipped to speculate where House Speaker Mike Turzai took off to.  Margo Davidson stated “we know where Donald Trump is at, but where is the House Speaker?”

After the press conference, a comment was made that the House will not have voting sessions on Saturday or Sunday, despite earlier indications that the House would convene on Sunday night.  Speaking to a couple of legislators on the condition of anonymity, they confirmed the comments that were made.  There is currently a package of a budget bills that the Senate sent to the House yesterday before leaving for the Pennsylvania Society.  While eating breakfast in Midtown, Manhattan, Senate President Jake Corman told reporters that “the Senate has done it’s job.”  Asked about the prospects of having a budget done by Monday, one legislator told me “you have to meet before you vote for a budget.”
