A Tale of Two Pennsylvanias: Philadelphia Community Organizations Endorse John Hanger

On Saturday February 1, community and progressive activist organizations from Southeastern Pennsylvania are holding an event for gubernatorial candidate John Hanger at the Arch Street Methodist Church in Philadelphia.  John Hanger will talk about the “tale of two Pennsylvania’s, one for the wealthiest 1 percent and one for the rest of us”  Speakers will include members from Progressive Philly Rising, Boat People SOS-Delaware County, Point Breeze Organizing Committee, Asian Americans United, Coalition of Labor Union Women, Action United, author, public speaker, and labor leader Bill Fletcher Jr.

A statement was released by Progressive Philly Rising, and Erica Coleman from the Point Breeze Organizing Committee reads:

Community leaders across Philadelphia will join with Pennsylvania Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Hanger this Saturday to extend President Obama’s call to fight poverty and inequality. Progressive Philly Rising is emerging on the heels of real progressive victories at the ballot box, from Bill De Blasio’s triumph in New York City to Elizabeth Warren’s meteoric rise as a leader of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.  Building on this energy, the event will offer real contrasts to the other Democratic candidates. “This is about our schools, our jobs, our public infrastructure, and our democracy, and for that reason we join with John Hanger’s People’s Campaign, because his vision for Pennsylvania is rooted in the struggles of Philadelphians and people all across this great state,” explained Erica Coleman of Point Breeze Organizing Committee

And continued with:

We see this as a moment when real people and the organizations that represent them will point the way forward after decades where the interests of Wall Street have dominated Washington D.C., Harrisburg and City Hall,” said Dina Yarmus, Chair of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW)’s Young Women’s Committee. John Hanger’s People’s Campaign has not relied on the old conventions of appealing to fundraisers, rather he has appealed to ordinary people, and it’s a people power so significant, Ed Rendell has taken notice, saying “John Hanger has been the most substantive in responding to Gov. Corbett.

The event will be held from 3-5 in the afternoon.
